This is the Pacific Ocean south of Montezuma (a few kilometers at most), the beach is pretty rocky here in places, this is mostly looking north (or north-east). It’s a little distorted because it’s not a normal photo.

I love walking around this area because you can walk on many of the big rocks (lava?) and the ocean is all around you. But the waves are a bit rougher here so it’s a little hard to go swimming.

This is actually a flattened version of an 360° (720$deg;?) interactive panorama (a PhotoSynth) that I thought looked pretty interesting. There are probably 20-30 photos that make up this image. You can see the actual photosynth here, it’s not one of my best photosynths, the waves kept changing the landscape and didn’t want to fit everything together.

This was taken with the PhotoSynth app on my iPhone 4s.

These trees are very common in Costa Rica. The winding branches with the vines all over them. I think they are kind of creepy looking, at night, they’re kind of scary looking. While this may look very bright, it’s kind of dim out. This is a thirteen second exposure photo, if you look close you can see a few of the vines are blurred since they were swaying in the wind.

This was taken from the balcony at the hotel I was staying at, the brightest part of this is lit from the light out front. There isn’t much behind the tree since it’s facing the empty grounds that surround the local church.

If you’re not into photography, 13 seconds is a really long time; normal flash photography is 1/60th of a second (this is 700 times longer than that!) and on a bright sunny day your camera might be shooting at 1/1000th of a second.

It’s not one of my awesomest photos, but I really like how the bird blends in with the surroundings. At first, did you see the bird in this photo?

I took this somewhere up high while heading to the upper waterfalls in Montezuma. I think it’s the stream/river that you cross when you’re getting near the end of the hike (past the hard steep climb).

Anyone know what kind of bird this is?

This is a rickity bridge along the path in Cabo Blano National Reserve. Cabo Blanco is one long 2 hour path from the ranger station to the beach, it’s a grueling hike, lots of steep up and down walking (they’ve actually got cement blocks in place, but it’s work) and then you’ve got to walk back too!

There are lots of animals if you take to time to stop, catch your breath and relax. Just don’t say anything or you’ll scare them away. And have your camera ready!!!!

If four hours sounds to difficult for you: Thirty (or forty minutes) minutes into the hike there is a loop you can take back, so if you don’t want to be walking for four hours, you can take the shorter version. I don’t think the short version ever gets as steep as farther down the trail. And you’ll still see lots of animals and plants.

Right behind me are some really small waterfalls (maybe more like cascades, but they were kind of noisy) that I found (more behind where I’m standing). It was very very green and it must have been kind of dark in the shade there because the sky looks so washed out. I could be wrong, maybe it was just a gray day, but I think it was a pretty bright one…

Later: Looking at this Pacific Ocean photosynth that I took around the same time in the same area, you can see it was a bright cloudy day. So maybe it’s just washed out since it’s only seeing the white clouds.
These are the waterfalls that are a 2 hour hike north up the beach from Montezuma. Sometimes you hit some really deserted area on the way to get here. It’s not too bad of a walk, mostly sand, some rocks and a small amount in the woods. I take my time, relax, swim. eat and take photos, it probably takes me 3 hours each way (plus hanging out for an hour) which makes for a full day for me. Although, sometimes I leave to late in the day so I try not to go too slow on the way back so I don’t get caught in the dark.

As a reference, this is WAY easier than the 2 hour (up and down) hike at Cabo Blanco.

Here’s some video from El Chorro Waterfalls and a few photos with some more info.
